“Perhaps the issue with both artificial intelligence and the Cybernetic Factory is that we have been trying to entrap a brain within the machine, when the real brain — the oracle — is outside. The oracle is the world.”
(Bridle, J., 2002, p. 190)
Technical Architecture
This section is dedicated to the documentation of the technical architecture of the (v)Ideogrammatic Writing Machine ([v]IWM). The system is composed of multiple interconnected modules — both hardware and software — designed to capture, process and transduce natural elements (such as wind, light and sound) into visual and sonic inscriptions. Its core structure is built around a real-time computational flow, where image synthesis, sensor data acquisition, OSC signal processing, and robotic actuation converge within a machinic-poetic operation.

Guided by a commitment to openness and collaborative development, this space will provide downloadable materials to support the replication and adaptation of the [v]IWM. These resources will include schematics, code libraries, 3D models, component lists, and setup guidelines. The aim is to invite other practitioners — artists, researchers, educators — to engage in their own field mediations using the [v]IWM framework, and to share the outcomes of those encounters with the wider community.
Although the materials are still under preparation, this initiative marks the beginning of an open protocol for (v)ideogrammatic mediation — a distributed practice that seeks to reconfigure the relationship between humans, machines, and environments through experimental inscription.
We look forward to making these resources available soon.
Gallery: The [v]IWM system in images
This gallery presents a visual overview of the [v]IWM — the (v)Ideogrammatic Writing Machine — in its various configurations and components, as deployed in situ. Each image foregrounds specific aspects of the system’s technical architecture, including sensor arrays, robotic frameworks, network infrastructure, and audiovisual interfaces.
Please note that this section is currently being updated. Additional materials — including detailed diagrams, technical schematics, and documentation — will be made available shortly.
Videos: [1]
Rather than merely illustrating a technological setup, these images are documents of a dynamic and situated apparatus: a machine that evolves through its encounters with the environment. From panoramic mounts to mobile robotic cameras, from OSC signal receivers to video synthesis modules, the [v]IWM is shown here not as a static object but as a constellation of elements — each contributing to a process of poetic inscription.

This visual documentation complements the written materials presented in this section and is intended as a resource for those seeking to replicate or adapt the system. As the [v]IWM continues to evolve, this gallery will be updated with new configurations and field-based implementations contributed by future collaborators.
